Brevard Rotary Race ImageThe downtown Brevard Rotary Foundation proudly announces The 28th Annual (and newly “certified”) FLIGHT OF THE VAMPIRE 5K RACE, at TWILIGHT on Saturday, October 25th,  through downtown Brevard, during Transylvania County’s Halloween Festival. “This is our only evening race event,” said Harry Lewis, president of the downtown Rotary.  “Because many people come in masks and costumes in celebration of “HalloweenFest,” it’s one of our favorite events. This is a fun race for the entire family and also for the serious runner, now that all of our races are ‘certified.’

Check-in tents for the race’s 5:30PM shotgun start will be set-up in the green space at 299 S. Broad Street, just south of the Library, in downtown Brevard. Check-in time is at 3:30 PM.

The cost to participate is $20 ($5 additional on race day).  All Rotary races are officially “certified” and timing is provided by SETUPEVENTS, using Championship Chips.  The first 300 pre-registrants receive a free long-sleeved race T-shirt and ‘goodie’ bag on day of event. Those runners registering after cut-off date will receive their T-shirts by mail after the event.  Medals will be awarded to each age category in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  Pre-registration and race information is on-line at: .  Credit card registration is also available through: .

Registration forms will also be available locally at WSQL-Radio Station, The Sports Spot, Chamber of Commerce, Love’s Jewelry & Gifts (all on Main Street in downtown Brevard) and at the Transylvania County Public Library (on Broad St.).

This year, the downtown Rotary added a third club-sponsored race, in addition to the upcoming Flight of the Vampire 5K and the recent 4th of July Firecracker 5K and 10K races, now in their 14th year.  The White Squirrel Race which kicked-off the downtown Brevard Memorial Day Weekend Festival in May was a huge success. Runners from throughout the U.S. now participate in these races and are helping to spread the word about Brevard races and the exciting outdoor opportunities available in WNC. Proceeds from all races go directly back to community projects.

Rotary is an international organization of business and professional leaders whose main objective is ‘service above self’ – in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world. Rotarians develop projects that address critical issues, such as children at risk, illiteracy, worldwide polio eradication and programs for youth career development.  Locally, the Rotary Club of Brevard helped organize the Gift of Life Program, which arranges for medical/surgical assistance to needy children whose families can’t afford the often lifesaving procedures.  The club helped renovate Franklin Park, sponsored the Pete Kuehne Terrace at the new public library, and currently provides dictionaries to all third graders in Transylvania County schools.  The Club also awards scholarships to local students attending Brevard College and Blue Ridge Community College, contributes to the local United Way organization, supports a reading program with Smart Start, organizes and operates the week-long Leadership Camp for high school students throughout Western North Carolina, hosts a Career Day for Transylvania 10th graders, and in engaged in many other local projects and program.

The Rotary Club of Brevard, Transylvania County’s first and oldest Rotary chapter, meets for lunch at 12 noon every Tuesday in downtown Brevard, at The Quarry Restaurant on S. Gaston St., and welcomes new members and guests.
