Janet Lee Henderson’s great-grandfather, Francisco Garcia, was a pioneer in cigar manufacturing in West Tampa, New York City, and Havana, Cuba. Her great, great grandfather, W. B. Henderson, was a Tampa cattle baron and city pioneer. Another great grandfather was the first postmaster general for Port Tampa and her great grandmother, Mabel Bean, was a spy for Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish/American War, taking secret messages by bicycle from the Tampa Bay Hotel (University of Tampa) to the fort at Port Tampa. Her grandmother was a Ziegfeld Follies Girl in New York City in the 1920‘s. Hmmmm.
Janet is a sixth generation Tampan, with family roots that stretch from one end of this community to the other. The first woman in Hillsborough County to be invited to join the downtown Rotary Club (1989), Ms. Henderson is a well-connected and respected member of the Tampa business community.
Her past life work experiences include management positions with Hill & Knowlton, International Public Relations and Public Affairs Counseling Firm, where she also conducted speaker and media training sessions; legislative aide work for Florida State Senator Helen Gordon Davis; and corporate spokesperson roles with GTE Corporation and its cellular division GTE Cellular Communications (now Verizon). She created a public relations division at Paradigm Communications, where she also managed marketing, advertising, and sales promotions for clients such as the Tampa-Hillsborough County Convention and Visitors Association and projects with The Florida Aquarium, MOSI and Busch Gardens. The award-winning “Tampa, What A Great Idea” logo and marketing campaign (introduced in 1994 and still in use today) was created under her account stewardship. In addition, Janet was head of the Technophone cellular telephone account which became a division of Nokia Mobile Phones. See the list of past and present clients.
