Tampa – Les Blank is a prize-winning independent filmmaker, best know for a series of poetic films that led critic Vincent Canby, writing in the New York Times, to declare that Blank “is a master of movies about the American idiom…one of our most original filmmakers.”

Les Blank will be in attendance and honored with a retrospective of his films at the 4th annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image, sponsored by Hillsborough Community College. The festival will take place April 4-9, 2006 at numerous venues throughout Ybor City.

The festival continues to program quality independent features, documentaries, animation and shorts. Included are unusual performances, art installations and visual happenings from national and regional artists, all related to the cinematic form.

Born in Tampa, Florida in 1935, Les Blank’s numerous awards include the British Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary (Burden of Dreams, 1982), Grand Prize, Melbourne Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival (In Heaven There Is No Beer, 1985). These titles and numerous other films will be screened over the five-day festival in celebration of Les’ exemplary work as a documentary filmmaker. Les will be in attendance and will present two new works.

In 1990, Les Blank received the American Film Institute’s Maya Deren Award for outstanding lifetime achievement as an independent filmmaker. Time Magazine critic Jay Cocks wrote, “I can’t believe that anyone interested in movies in America…could watch Blank’s work without feeling they’d been granted a casual, soft-spoken revelation.”
