The Rotary Club of Brevard proudly announces the Second Annual White Squirrel 5K and 10K races to be held.  Kicking off the Heart of Brevard’s annual White Squirrel Festival, the White Squirrel Races will both have an 8:00 AM shotgun start at the BREVARD MUSIC CENTER (across from Straus Auditorium).

“We used this ‘start’ location for last year’s race and received a number of compliments on the course,” said Sammy Kicklighter, president of the Rotary Club of Brevard. “Now that all of our races are officially CERTIFIED and meet USATF requirements, we’re sure to please both the serious runners and those who run for fun.  In addition, we’ve made some improvements to our race procedures which include mile markers and time callers.  Of course we’ll still have the water stations and refreshments and this year we’ll even have some live entertainment for the runners to enjoy as they wait for their time and hopefully their medals!”

Timing is provided by SETUPEVENTS, using Championship Chips.  The cost to participate for pre-registrants is $25 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Students, ages 18 and under and Seniors, 65 and over pay $20 for either race. Add $5.00 for late registration after May 18th and on Race Day.

Check-in tents for the races’ 8:00 AM shotgun start will be set-up adjacent to Straus Auditorium across from the Administration Building at the Brevard Music Center.  Check-in time on Saturday is between  6:30 – 7:45 AM.

All pre-registrants are guaranteed FREE T-Shirts, but those who register late will only receive a T-Shirt as long as supplies last. Medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall male and female winners in both the 5K and 10K races.  Additional medals will be awarded to each age category in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.  All courses are certified and meet USATF requirements.

Pre-registration forms and additional information is available on-line at: squirrelrace .  Credit card registration is also available through: .

Registration forms will be available at The Sports Spot, Love’s Jewelry, Foot Rx (Asheville), the Chamber of Commerce, Fitness Factory, Quotations, and at the Transylvania County Public Library.

The addition of this third ‘club-sponsored’ race, allows the Rotary Club of Brevard to continue to fund specific projects in the county.  Already well-known for the 4th of July Firecracker 5K and 10K races and the Flight of the Vampire 5K, which both kick-off City festivals and use a downtown course for runners, the 2nd Annual White Squirrel races give runners a different path for this Memorial Day Weekend festival.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders whose main objective is “service above self “  – in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world. Rotarians develop projects that address critical issues, such as children at risk, illiteracy, worldwide polio eradication and programs for youth career development.

Locally, the Rotary Club of Brevard, formed in 1947,  provides student scholarships to local students attending Brevard College and Blue Ridge Community College, hosts a Career Day for all 10th graders and provides dictionaries to all 3rd graders in Transylvania County.  In addition, the Rotary Club of Brevard participates in the Honor Air program which recently sent local World War II Veterans to Washington, D.C. for a special program. The club helped organize the Gift of Life Program, which last year arranged for medical/surgical and dental assistance to a child from the Philippines who suffered severe burns as an infant. It has also helped renovate Franklin Park, sponsored the Pete Kuehne Terrace at the new public library, contributes to the local United Way, and raises money and supplies for the Salvation Army in addition to the annual Christmas bell-ringing program, and many other local projects. In the 1960s, the Brevard Rotary club organized the week-long District Leadership Camp (RYLA) for area high school students (at Brevard Music Center) who are nominated by Rotary clubs throughout Western North Carolina. The Rotary Club of Pisgah Forest and the Rotary Club of Flat Rock are also hosts to RYLA.

The Rotary Club of Brevard meets for lunch at 12 noon each Tuesday at The Quarry (14 S. Gaston St.) in downtown Brevard and welcomes new members and guests.  For more information, contact Janet Henderson at 828/883-4888.
